What is a MID (Merchant ID)?

A MID, or Merchant ID, is a unique identifier assigned to a business so the card networks and acquiring bank can route and settle its card transactions.

How a MID works

Every time a customer pays by card, the transaction is tagged with your MID. The acquirer uses it to authorise the payment, attribute the funds, and settle them to your account. Without a valid MID, a business cannot accept card payments.

Dedicated vs shared MIDs

A dedicated MID belongs to your business alone, giving you cleaner reporting, control over risk and approval rates, and resilience - if one route is interrupted, volume can move to another MID. Shared or aggregated MIDs pool many merchants together, which is faster to start but offers less control and higher account-stability risk.

Why MIDs matter for high-risk merchants

High-risk businesses such as iGaming, forex and crypto benefit most from multiple dedicated MIDs: volume can be spread across them to manage limits and risk, and intelligent routing sends each transaction to the MID most likely to approve it. PlatinumEdge provisions dedicated MIDs at company and brand level for exactly this reason.

FAQ
Is a MID the same as a merchant account?

They are closely related but not identical. A merchant account is where card funds are held and settled; the MID is the unique identifier that links transactions to that account. One merchant account can have multiple MIDs.

Can one business have multiple MIDs?

Yes. Businesses often run multiple MIDs - per brand, region or product line - to manage limits, spread risk and keep approval rates high through routing and cascading.
