What is an IBAN?

An IBAN, or International Bank Account Number, is a standardised international format that uniquely identifies a bank account so payments can be routed correctly across borders.

How an IBAN is structured

An IBAN combines a country code, check digits and the domestic account number into one string. The format lets banks validate and route payments consistently between countries - it is the backbone of euro and cross-border transfers.

IBAN vs SWIFT/BIC

The IBAN identifies the account; the SWIFT/BIC identifies the bank. Cross-border payments often use both. SEPA euro transfers typically need only the IBAN.

Virtual IBANs

A virtual IBAN is a dedicated IBAN issued to a business or individual through a provider, so funds arrive in your own named details. PlatinumEdge issues dedicated European virtual IBANs (vBANs) inside a multi-currency account.

FAQ
Can I get a dedicated IBAN online?

Yes. Providers such as PlatinumEdge issue dedicated IBANs through an online application, subject to KYC for individuals or KYB for businesses.

Is an IBAN the same as an account number?

An IBAN contains the account number plus a country code and check digits in a standardised international format, so it works for cross-border and SEPA payments.
