What is a merchant category code (MCC)?

A merchant category code (MCC) is a four-digit number the card networks use to classify a business by the type of goods or services it sells.

How MCCs are used

MCCs drive interchange fees, risk classification and which transactions an issuer will approve. Certain MCCs - gaming, forex, crypto - are flagged as higher risk, which is why those businesses face more declines.

MCC and high-risk

If your MCC signals a high-risk vertical, mainstream acquirers may decline you automatically. The fix is applying with a provider that underwrites your MCC and routes accordingly.

Getting the right MCC

Using an accurate MCC matters for both compliance and approvals. PlatinumEdge underwrites complex MCCs that others avoid - see merchant solutions.

FAQ
Why does my MCC cause declines?

Issuers and acquirers use the MCC to gauge risk. High-risk MCCs (e.g. gaming, forex, crypto) trigger more scrutiny and automatic declines from mainstream processors.

Can I change my MCC?

Your MCC should accurately reflect your business. A specialist acquirer assigns the correct high-risk MCC and underwrites it, rather than forcing you into a mismatched low-risk code.
