What is 3-D Secure (3DS2)?

3-D Secure (3DS), now 3DS2, is an authentication layer that verifies the cardholder during an online card payment - reducing fraud and, in many cases, shifting chargeback liability to the issuer.

How 3DS2 works

During checkout, 3DS2 shares risk signals with the card issuer, which decides whether to approve silently (frictionless) or request a step-up such as a one-time code. Most low-risk payments pass without friction.

Liability shift

When a transaction is authenticated with 3-D Secure, liability for certain fraud-related chargebacks typically moves from the merchant to the issuer - a meaningful protection for high-volume merchants.

Balancing security and conversion

Over-using step-up authentication can cost sales. PlatinumEdge applies 3DS2 and fraud screening intelligently - protecting approval rates while stopping fraud, rather than challenging every payment.

FAQ
Does 3-D Secure reduce chargebacks?

Yes. By authenticating the cardholder and shifting liability for many fraud chargebacks to the issuer, 3DS2 reduces both fraud and the disputes that follow.

Is 3DS2 required?

It is mandatory in some regions (for example, under SCA rules in Europe) and optional in others, but it is widely used to cut fraud and protect approval rates.
